Every book is shelved under one or more traditions. Membership means relevance, not endorsement — a skeptic's survey and a practitioner's manual sit side by side.

Libra Esoterica Pro
Research across the texts themselves.
The Research console is a reading companion for the whole collection: it reads the catalog and the public-domain full texts, answers in plain prose, and shows exactly which books it leaned on.
Ask across the whole library
Put a question to 93,000+ catalog records and thousands of public-domain full texts at once, instead of one search box at a time.
Answers that cite their sources
Every claim points back to specific books — and, where a scan has been ingested, to the passage itself — so you can check the console's work.
Compare traditions
See how a practice or idea is treated in Kabbalah, in Theosophy, and in psychical research without leaving the conversation.
Follow a thread across centuries
Trace a symbol, a place, or a person from a 1541 Latin print to a 2019 university press monograph.
Question
Where does the Emerald Tablet first appear in Latin?
Answer
Not from a Greek original: the tablet reaches Latin by way of Arabic. Its earliest surviving text is embedded in the Arabic Sirr al-khalīqa attributed to Balīnūs, and Latin versions appear in the twelfth century — one translated by Hugo of Santalla, another the “vulgate” text that alchemists came to quote and that Hortulanus later glossed1.
In print, the earliest Latin witness on these shelves is the Nuremberg De alchemia of 1541, which sets the tablet beside Hortulanus’s commentary2; a Strasbourg collection of 1566 reprints it “as found in his tomb,” commentary and all3. Both scans are open access and can be read here.
