Brennuöldin fjallar um atburði og tíðaranda þeirra tíma þegar orðrómur og "illt rykti" um galdur gat kostað fólk lífið og menn áttu það undir sveitungum sínum, velvilja þeirra eða tortryggni, hvort þeir höfnuðu á bálkestinum sem "sannreyndir galdramenn".
