Libra Esoterica

Christian perfection, consisting in the Love of God: Explain’d in Several Letters to a Lady, &c. Written Originally in Italian, by Cardinal Petrucci. Now Render’d into English, With an Account of the Author

by Pier Pier Matteo Petrucci

  • First published:
  • 18th century
  • Language: English
  • Content type: Primary source

8vo. pp. (16), 416, plus engraved frontispiece. Contemporary gilt morocco. Sole edition of this curious English translation of a Quietistic treatise for women by Cardinal Petrucci. Petrucci’s writings on the passive resignation of the soul to God were outlawed by the Inquisition in 1688 for being heretically mystical, but it is especially odd to find them translated for English Protestants. The frontispiece is printed on thick paper and may have doubled as a prayer card; it depicts a cross with the mottoes “I am Nothing / Desire Nothing / I can do Nothing / Ask Nothing / Seek Nothing / I Know Nothing / Will Nothing / But God”
