Printed marginalia. Two large folded star charts (stars represented by Hebrew letters) bound-in at back of book. First published: Paris : H. du Mesnil, 1629. Noted in Gemology by J. Sinkankas, entry no. 2287. The author was Cardinal Richelieu's priest and librarian. He is also known to be a learned writer on rabbinical works and cabalistic science. "[This] work was condemned by the Sorbonne and aroused virulent attacks, but it was nevertheless reprinted three times within six months and widely translated."--bookseller's description. "Ch. 5 in the second part is mostly of interest to gemologists because...it treats engraved gems, and other gemstones in which the images...are natural."--Gemology, by J. Sinkankas, vol 1, p. 368.
