Description
In 1597, King James VI of Scotland (future James I of England) wrote a demonology treaty titled Daemonologie in forme of a dialogue. It is the only demonology treaty written by a king and was inspired by the North Berwick trials, during which James VI himself was among the judges. This essay aims to study the treaty to understand how its author uses the dialogue to convey his position towards witchcraft, and to warn his readers against the Devil and the tricks he uses against mankind. This text has a lot in common with the other demonology treatises that were published since the 15th century; more than with its contents, it is with its form as a dialogue that King James’ treaty distinguishes itself from the others.
