“Twice before in my life had I been in my present condition, — freed, apparently, from the limitations of physical sense, and from the shell of an earthly body, — but previously in similar states I had been urged by a nervous fright to return at once to my normal condition. Emboldened by the safety of the former experiences, I determined to use this freedom from the trammels of sense to transport myself in thought to a distant place ; for I realized I was beyond the bounds of mortal estimates of time and space. Still a little timid, however, I hesitated, lest by going too far from my body, which had served me so faithfully for fifty years, I might not be able to return.” (Chapter 1)
