ccount of the funeral of Francesco de'Medici, fourth son of Cosimo II, who died of the plague on July 25th, 1634, aged only twenty. Francesco was an officer in the Imperial Army; at the time of his death he was erving at the siege of Regensburg. The funeral was held in San Lorenzo. The catafalque and decorations (interior and exterior) were designed were designed by Alfonso Parigi, court architect to the Medici. The author, Andrea Cavalcanti, was a scholar and bibliophile; a member of the Accademia della Crisca, he was a prolific author, though his works (with the exception of the present volume) circulated only in manuscript, and were not printed until the 1870s. He was a member of Salvator Rosa's circle in the 1640s, and he was the owner of the autograph manuscript of Cellini's autobiography. His memoirs are preserved in the Biblioteca Riccardiana (Ms. 2270).
