W. T. Stead's first work of fiction, 'From the Old World to the New' was published as the Christmas edition of the Review of Reviews for 1892. The story was intended to act both as a work of romantic fiction and as a guide for British visitors to the Chicago World's Fair. At the time of writing, Stead had never visited America. The story is best known for a prophetic section in which a White Star Line vessel, The Majestic, rescues the passengers of another ship after a collision with an iceberg. Stead went down with the Titanic 20 years later. Spiritualism - one of Stead's most fervent and controversial passions during this stage of his career - also makes an appearance. This scan also includes an appendix/advertorial advising British readers on the best way to reach the Chicago World's Fair. It also includes several advertisements for travel companies, American slang dictionaries, and other late-Victorian companies and products.
