Die Hauptaufgabe des vorliegenden Werkes ist es, das Augenmerk der wissenschaftlichen Welt auf das hochinteressante Studium der marinen Tiergeographie zu lenken, die bisher über Gebühr vernachlässigt wurde: abgesehen von einigen wenigen, unvollkommenen Versuchen aus älterer Zeit, haben wir kein Werk, dass die geographische Verbreitung der Meerestiere unter allgemeinen Gesichtspunkten und von einem wissenschaftlichen Standpunkt aus behandelt.
