Jüngerer Titurel 1450

The title and material of "Jüngerer Titurel" tie in with the Titurel fragments by Wolfram von Eschenbach (ca.1170/80-1216) and his "Parzival" (Cgm 19). It tells the love story of Sigune and Tschinotulander as well as the history of the Grail from the construction of the Grail Temple to Parzival's search for the Grail and the Lohengrin plot. The author is an educated poet, perhaps from Bavaria, named Albrecht, who for a long time was identified with an otherwise unknown Albrecht von Scharfenberg. Ulrich Füetrer's "Book of Adventures" (Cgm 1) contains a Merlin novel by this Albrecht. The work is preserved in 56 manuscripts and fragments. The Munich Codex from the 2nd quarter of the 15th century contains just the second part, the first volume of the manuscript is lost. Cgm 8470 occupies a special position in medieval epic illustration due to its extensive, artistically demanding picture cycle. They mainly show fighting and courtly love scenes but also pictures of seafaring, conversations, farewells and laments. Stylistically, the miniatures point to Austria. Another special feature is the oldest literary representation of the Pietà, which is illustrated three times in the manuscript (including leaf 194v).
