The compilation Aureum vellus, including works by Trimosin and others, was first published in 1598 (Tractatus I-III) and 1604 (Tractatus IV-V); cf. Sudhoff. The present work is a reissue of a 1602 French translation (with additions by the translator) of the 1st part of Tractatus III, entitled Splendor solis; cf. Hogart. Some copies, otherwise identical, have the date 1613; cf. Brunet, NUC Figures 1-22 are pen and ink symbolic drawings, colored with watercolor and gouache, and mounted in spaces reserved for them in the text. The border of an added t.p., also drawn and hand colored, incorporates motifs from a number of the figures. The ill. in the 1st German ed. of Aureum vellus (1598-1604) are woodcuts, however. While Brunet so describes the ill. of a copy of Toyson d'or dated 1613 ("sur bois"), the entry in NUC for that copies with that date reports separately printed, hand-colored etchings, and the ill. in the later German ed. of Aureum vellus (Hamburg, 1708) are also etchings (though printed directly on the page and not colored). The drawings in Library's copy thus appear to be substitutes for separately printed, hand-colored etchings Leaf mounted with added t.p. is not original in Library's copy Spine title: Salomon Trismosin / La toyson d'or / Le grand miracle metalique Library's copy bound with: Le grand miracle de natvre metalliqve / Pere Castagne.
