[18], 921, [47] p. : 42 cm. (fol. in 6's) The Eikonĕs are associated with the four sophists of the Philostratus family of Lemnos, who lived 2nd-3rd century A.D.; see Oxford companion to classical literature. The first series has been uncertainly attributed to Philostratus the Athenian, the second to Philostratus the Lemnian Brunet notes that this translation was first published at Paris, 1578 in 4to. The illustrated folio ed. was first published there in 1609 by Claude Cramoisy, followed by the ed. of Abel l'Angelier's widow in 1614 or 1615. Also issued in 1637 by Jean Branchu, Sebastien Cramoisy and C. Sonnius; see BN First leaf is engraved t.p. Some of the engraved ill. are signed by Léonard Gaultier or Thomas de Leu after Antoine Caron. Others are signed by Jaspar Isaac alone. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Grotesque, floriated and foliated initials Signatures: pi1 ã⁸ A-3D⁶ 3E⁶(3E5+'3E') 3F-4G⁶ 4H⁴ 4I-4L⁶ 4M⁶(-4M6). Interpolated leaf signed 3E is misnumbered 601. Page nos. 833-834 omitted Includes index
