Liber florum celestis doctrinae

Liber florum celestis doctrinae Unique MS. of the 'Old Compilation'; see John of Morigny, Liber florum celestis doctrinae, ed. C. Fanger and N. Watson (Toronto, 2015), passim. Visions, prayers, and rhapsodies of 'Johannes de Carnoto, monachus de Morigniaco', i.e. of the Benedictine abbey of Morigny (Maurigniacum) near Étampes, composed in 1301-4, but here copied about a century later: 'Incipit liber visionum beate ... Virginis Marie' (the first was seen when John was about 14 years old 'dum manerem apud ciuitatem Carnotensium in claustro beate Marie': some were seen by his sister 'Burgita' [fol. 9]): at fol. 10v 'Finit liber visionum que sunt de reprobacione artis notorie et condempnacione ...', and after some prefatory matter to the next part (on fol. 16) is 'Explicit liber visionum fratris Johannis de Carnoto monachi de Morigniaco ...'. Then follows (fol. 18v) 'Hic incipit liber qui Gratia Domini nostri Ihesu Christi nuncupatur ... inceptus fuit anno Incarnacionis dominice M°. ccc°. primo et finitus anno Domini M°. ccc°. quarto ...'. Other titles of the work are suggested on fol. 11v. The whole composition is of a mystic kind, and consists chiefly of 'orationes', half didactic ('ad omnes artes sciendas', fol. 41), half religious, with many sub-titles and divisions--a summary is given on fol. 68, where also the Hebrew and Greek alphabets are written. A few 'orationes' are not by John, see fol. 25. Later prayers, etc. (15th-16th centtury), are added on fols. 68v-78, which are partly damaged.
