New Penny Standard Library Of Complete Tales No. 07 ("The Duchess's Warning") (Frederick Farrah, 1873). The New Penny Standard Library Of Complete Tales (aka The New Standard Library Of Complete Penny Novels ) was a series of short paperbound penny dreadful stories issued in 1873 by London publisher Frederick Farrah (only sixteen pages long, they were in no sense of the word complete "novels" - "complete tales" was the more accurate title). "The Duchess's Revenge" is a gruesome little tale of murder and vengeance, complete with ghostly warnings and a freshly severed head in a cabinet, oozing blood (the severed head scene was naturally chosen for the cover illustration). At least eight issues are known to have been published (the back cover notes "Others in preparation"): The New Standard Library Of Complete Penny Novels London: Frederick Farrah, 282 Strand, W.C.
