New Theology by John Bascom outlines the emergence of the New Theology which is now referred to as New Thought. Bascom's New Theology explores how "Naturalism, Supernaturalism, Dogmatism, Pietism, and Spiritualism" either contribute to the New Thought movement, or are incompatible with it.. "Religious action that does not perpetually reshape itself to these laws of conduct, growing up under the increased insight and widest experience of men, becomes religiosity, checking the freedom of thought, and barring out the Kingdom of Heaven." "A doctrine of inspiration that affirms the divine authority of any principle, aside from the insight of the mind of the recipient, involves an inadmissible idea, is without sufficient proof, fails to perform the very service expected of it, and interferes, at every stage, with the just development of religious truth."
