Pistis Sophia

A Gnostic Gospel

by George Robert Stowe Mead

  • First published:
  • 19th century
  • Language: English

Before the discovery of the Nag Hammadi texts in 1945, the Pistis Sophia was the most extensive Gnostic scripture available. It was discovered in 1773 and is considered one of the most important Gnostic texts, offering insights into early Christian mystical traditions and alternative interpretations of Christian doctrine. The Pistis Sophia is a complex and multi-layered text that combines elements of Christian theology, Gnostic cosmology, and mystical teachings. It contains dialogues between Jesus and his disciples, particularly Mary Magdalene, in which Jesus imparts esoteric knowledge about the nature of the universe, the soul's journey, and the mysteries of salvation. One of the central themes of the Pistis Sophia is the concept of redemption and the soul's ascent through various levels of spiritual realms to return to the divine Pleroma, or fullness. It also explores the role of Sophia, the divine feminine aspect, in the process of salvation and the restoration of balance in the universe.
