Logbook of a whaling voyage to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Includes descriptions of accidents, illnesses, desertions, injuries, a death at sea, a rescue. Also contains whale illustrations, porpoise illustrations, bird illustrations, illustrations of lunar notations and observations, profile views, chronometer readings, and accounts. The keeper writes that he and many other crew were seasick early in the voyage. A whaleboat was stove by a whale on January 9, 1836. The crew encountered snow storms as they rounded Cape Horn in February 1836. One man died of a hernia on May 4, 1836. One man was injured by a whale on August 1, 1836. The keeper writes of sperm whale anatomy, specifically the brain, on September 21, 1836. While anchored at Maui (Hawaii) and Oahu (Hawaii) in Novemeber 1836, April 1837, May 1837, and October 1837, November 1837, April 1838, and October 1838, the keeper lists all other vessels anchoring and departing in those ports during that time. One man was discharged on 16 November 1836 for being unable to perform his duties. The cooper reported a theft on April 3, 1837. One man fell overboard on 9 April 1837 but was saved. On 12 April 1837, the crew witnessed a "remarkable meteor" that illuminated the ship for 10 to 12 minutes and traveled in a "zig zag motion" as opposed to a straight line before making "one complete round turn." While in Oahu (Hawaii) on 7 November 1837, the crew and natives witnessed a tidal phenomenon and caught several fish. Other places represented include the Desventuradas Islands (San Felix and Saint Ambrose Islands). Whaling grounds include Cape Verde AREA, JAPAN.
