Tarot Before It Told Fortunes

Description
Tarot began as a fifteenth-century Italian court card game, and only in the late eighteenth century was it turned into an ancient book of fortune-telling; the Egyptian story was invented, and a leading occultist himself took it apart. A thing can be old without its claim being true: tarot is a fifteenth-century Italian card game that was only turned into an ancient oracle in the late 1700s by Court de Gebelin and then Etteilla, and an occultist as eminent as A.E. Waite called its Egyptian origin a claim with no particle of evidence; reading it asks us to separate the longing for mystery from the record that actually exists. Audiences: Curious readers about the line between history and belief — Assume tarot is an ancient divinatory inheritance because that is how the story is always told. Students of the history of ideas and esotericism — Want honest primary sources, not a recycled origin myth. Believers weighing the lure of borrowed mystery — Tempted to treat the cards as a door to the unseen. Note: written from Indonesian operator context. Frameworks apply broadly to other emerging-market and SME settings.
