AS I WALKED through the wilderness of the world, I came to a place where there was a den. When at the first I took my Pen in hand, / Thus for to write; I did not understand / That I at all should make a little Book / In such a mode: Nay, I had undertook / To make another; which, when almost done, / Before I was aware, I this begun. IN MY JOURNEY through the wilderness of this world there came a time when I found myself caged up in a very dreary dungeon. AS I WALKED through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place where was a den, and laid me down in that place to sleep; and as I slept, I dreamed a dream. As I walked through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place, where was a Den, and I laid me down in that place to sleep: And as I slept, I dreamed a Dream. THE seventeenth century was singularly prolific in great writers, religious and secular; and the one who in his origin was the humblest them, and in his educational advantages the most unfortunate-John Bunyan-is now, after an interval of a couple of hundred years, the best known and the most popular of them all. When at the first I took my pen in hand Thus for to write, I did not understand That I at all should make a little book In such a mode; nay, I had undertook To make another, which, when almost done, Before I was aware, I this begun.
