This was scanned from "The Negro and his Folklore in Nineteenth-Century Periodicals", published by the American Folklore society and the University of Texas Press in 1967. I apologize if anyone finds her characterization of the ex-slaves' speech offensive. I think, in the greater context of the article, that she meant well. It was a different time.
