Two pages from Acts of the Apostles ('The Laudian Acts')

The added texts on 226v are the Apostle's Creed in Latin, added in Continental uncial script, 8th century, with marginal scribbles in Carolingian minuscule; and a note on the oracle of Delphi, added in cursive majuscule, 7th century. The added texts on 227r are invocations to the Virgin Mary, added in cursive majuscule and minuscule, 7th century. The drypoint note from the inner margin of fol. 226v was described in the article ‘A stage in the history of the Laudian MS of Acts’ by Reginald L. Poole, in 1928. Almost impossible to see due to its size and shallow depth, the render we see here is likely to be the first image to evidence Poole’s reading of the inscription Mariae [uirginis] Gamundum, establishing a link to the Abbey of the Virgin Mary in Hornbach, Germany. The facing recto contains another incised note. Among a muddle of inked inscriptions are a grouping of tiny, pierced indentations forming the outline of a crucifix, followed by a collection of letters, the meaning of which at the time of writing, have yet to be confirmed. Two pages from 'The Laudian Acts', a late 6th or early 7th century manuscript copy of the Acts of the Apostles in Greek, almost certainly used by Bede at the abbey of Wearmouth-Jarrow.
