THE supreme ideal of epic poetry, in ancient as in modern times, was always the Epic of Homer; it was to this that poet and public alike looked for a criterion; and so lofty was this ideal that while, on the one hand, the possibility of attaining to it was excluded, on the other hand those who failed to attain to it might yet reach to a great and imposing elevation.
