[Letter to] Mr. Garrison

Holograph, signed On page one of this manuscript, Thomas Cushman Buddington writes to William Lloyd Garrison: "Enclosed is a photograph of Mr. Sumner which came upon a plate Feb. 22, 1877 as I was trying experiments to determine the possibility of genuine spirit photography. ..." On page two, there is a separate note by Thomas Cushman Buddington's brother, H. A. Buddington, dated April 5, 1877, 402 Main Street, Springfield, Mass. He attests to the veracity of the photograph and gives the address of a gallery in Boston, where photographs are being displayed. When Garrison was last in Springfield, H. A. Buddington had a long talk with him "on the subject of spirit." On page three, there is statement by Thomas Cushman Buddington elaborating on the photograph and spiritualism: "The world will yet become informed of the great principles underlying existence in all its varied phases and it is a part of the our work to give these proofs of immortality. ...This picture was given under the strongest test conditions possible to devise nothing being used upon the earthly side save the ordinary methods in photography. Can you ask more?"
