The editor, J.G. Zimmermann, originally published pt. 1 without the author's permission in the Hannoverisches Magazin (Feb. 3, 7 and 10, 1772). In a preface to this edition of pt. 1, Zimmermann states that he omits his own notes, to which Lavater had objected
